Net Worth vs Wealth: The Hidden Lesson Behind Elon Musk's Fortune

The real question isn't 'how much is my business worth?' but 'do my systems give me stability and freedom that last?'

Net worth versus true wealth — stability and freedom

Two words are often confused: net worth and wealth. And that confusion is costly — not just for billionaires, but for us as entrepreneurs, when we build our businesses chasing the wrong number.

Let’s take the most extreme example there is: Elon Musk.

An impressive number… that doesn’t tell the whole story

Net worth adds up what a person owns (stocks, companies, assets) and subtracts their debts. It’s a calculation on paper.

Elon Musk is regularly presented as the richest person in the world, with a fortune estimated in the hundreds of billions of dollars. But that number moves enormously — I’m not certain of the exact amount as you read this, because estimates vary by source and by week (I’ve seen figures ranging from about $630 billion to over $1 trillion USD in 2026 alone). If you want to cite a precise number, check Forbes or Bloomberg before sharing it.

What matters isn’t the number — it’s this: that fortune is almost entirely on paper. It’s made of stocks. Musk can’t “withdraw” it all at once without crashing the value of his own companies. One bad month on the stock market, and tens of billions can vanish — without him spending a dime.

Real wealth doesn’t evaporate in a week

Wealth, in the way we understand it at En-Riched, means:

  • The freedom to choose how you use your time
  • Stable income that doesn’t depend on a single client or a single market
  • Security for your family
  • Health, relationships, and a life rooted in faith

A home-based caterer with three loyal clients and regular monthly income can, by this definition, be wealthier than a billionaire whose fortune melts by several billion in one tough week on the stock market.

The question to ask yourself in your business

When you’re building a business — catering, hairdressing, sewing, cleaning, consulting — it’s easy to chase a single number: revenue, or what the business is “worth” on paper. But just like Musk’s net worth, that number can be misleading if it relies on a single client or a single revenue source.

The real question isn’t “how much is my business worth?” but “do my systems give me stability and freedom that last?”
