What Four Small Creatures Taught Me About Entrepreneurship

Some texts take a hundred readings before they finally hit you. Proverbs 30:24-28 is one of those for me.

Four small animals. None of them large. None of them powerful. None of them impressive. And yet each one is declared “full of wisdom.” Rereading it recently, it hit me: these are four entrepreneurial strategies, written millennia ago — and they haven’t aged a day.

🐜 The Ant: Prepares While Others Wait

The ant has no strength at all. It has a season — and it seizes it. While others rest, it stores. While others improvise, it plans ahead.

Building a business is exactly that: laying the foundation before the storm, not during it. The structure, the processes, the cash reserve built in the generous months — so you’re never caught off guard in the lean ones. It’s not glamorous. It’s what separates those who survive the crisis from those it sweeps away.

🪨 The Hyrax: Wins on Position, Not Power

The hyrax has “little power.” So it refuses to play that game. It picks its ground — the rocks, unconquerable terrain — and rules it.

Too many entrepreneurs exhaust themselves trying to out-muscle giants. The hyrax offers a different path: stop fighting on their turf, and find yours. The niche market. The specific community. The positioning where your smallness becomes your weapon.

🦗 Locusts: Advance Without Being Commanded

No king. No one giving orders. And yet they move in tight ranks, disciplined battalions. Order doesn’t come from the top — it comes from a shared vision.

🦎 The Lizard: Enters Where No One Expects It

You can catch it by hand. Nothing looks more vulnerable. And yet — it makes its home in kings’ palaces.

This is the image that strikes me most. Nothing about its means predestined it for that kind of access. And yet, it walks in. How many diaspora entrepreneurs, who started with no capital, no inherited network, no “right” accent, find themselves today sitting in rooms no one imagined them reaching? Strength doesn’t open those doors. A quiet, stubborn boldness does — one that moves forward without waiting to be big enough, ready enough, or legitimate enough. And that boldness is exactly what makes it powerful, despite everything it lacks.

What These Four Creatures Have in Common

None of them is large. None has status. And yet all of them are wise — not despite their smallness, but because they turned it into strategy: preparation, positioning, alignment, boldness.

Lacking big resources doesn’t make you a latecomer — it puts you in the same category as these four small creatures that biblical wisdom itself chose to celebrate.
